One of the advantages of painting in San Antonio is that our season never truly closes — we paint exteriors nearly year-round. But 'possible' and 'ideal' aren't the same thing, and after 18 years and hundreds of exterior projects, we've learned exactly how the South Texas calendar affects paint performance.
Spring (March through May) is prime time. Temperatures sit comfortably in the range where acrylic paints cure properly, and surfaces aren't yet holding the brutal heat of summer. The one variable is rain — spring storms can be sudden — which is why we watch forecasts closely and build flexibility into our schedules. Fall (October through early December) is the other sweet spot: stable weather, moderate temperatures, and lower humidity make for excellent curing conditions.
Summer painting is absolutely doable — we do it every year — but it requires professional judgment. The issue isn't air temperature; it's surface temperature. A west-facing wall in July afternoon sun can exceed 140°F, hot enough to make paint dry before it levels and bonds properly. Our crews work around the sun: east and north faces in the afternoon, west faces in the morning, and premium paints formulated for hot-weather application.
Winter in San Antonio rarely stops us either. Most modern acrylics can be applied down to 35–50°F, and our mild winters usually stay above that during working hours. We simply avoid painting when overnight temperatures threaten the curing window.
The real takeaway: the best time to paint is before your current finish fails. Peeling and cracking let moisture reach the substrate, and repair costs rise quickly from there.
